What Happened in Heaven on the Day Jesus Died?

On school mornings I would often pack lunches for my kids. Gabby liked fruit, Kaleb liked goldfish crackers. Occasionally I would write notes to them, so when they opened their lunch bags they would see a handwritten message from me, reminding them that I love them.

Imagine your Heavenly Father, with pen in hand, writing down His love for you, His plans for your life, and His commitment to bring it to pass. Well, in a sense, that’s exactly what He did.

In Revelation 5, the Apostle John was taken “back in time” into heaven to see something very significant. He saw the Father holding a scroll in His right hand, a handwritten description of His will and plans for all of mankind. However, the scroll was sealed and could not be opened.

Heaven and earth mourned because God’s will was bound – bound by mankind itself, through sin – bound in such a way that only the perfect, sinless blood of a Man could atone for the sin of man.

John’s weeping was interrupted by the hope-filled entry of the Lamb of God, Jesus, whose blood sacrifice had broken the seals and permitted God’s will to be realized on earth as it is in heaven.

And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”‭‭Revelation‬ ‭5:9-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

You can’t miss this picture! You may remember that, on the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, John was standing at the foot of the cross, embracing Mary, the mother of Jesus. He saw and felt the tragedy and horror of Jesus’ death.

Now, years later, an angel transports John back in time to that same day, only this time from heaven’s perspective. Heaven mourned that God’s will was sealed up, and mankind was bound by sin. Then Jesus appeared in their midst, “as a Lamb having recently been slaughtered,” whose blood broke the seals to release God’s purpose for humanity, whose power tore the veil of separation from God, whose resurrection set the precedence for every believer to be “raised to life in Christ!” Wow!! Talk about a different perspective!

Not only were we ransomed and redeemed by Jesus’ sacrifice, we were also made to be “a kingdom and priests to our God,” with authority to reign on the earth. That authority is not intended to have dominion over other people, but to exercise spiritual authority over the spirits of darkness who still attempt to hinder God’s will from being manifest on earth.

You could say that, although the will of God has been released from the Father, it still has yet to be received by many people on earth. Oppression, hatred, prejudice, hypocrisy, selfishness, unkindness, brutality – these things still exist where people refuse the ways and the will of God.

As believers, we play a critical role in releasing God’s will to be realized on earth. Our daily decisions become a living testimony for others to follow. Our prayers are effective in breaking strongholds and setting captives free. Our declaration of truth in a spirit of grace draws people to Jesus, who alone rules and reigns over all spiritual powers.

It’s true – the Father loves you, and He wrote His love and plans for your life in a scroll, which was unsealed and released through Jesus Christ. You may still face difficulties and even demonic attack, but, ultimately, you will reign for eternity with the Father who loves you, His Son who redeemed you, and His Spirit who empowers you.

Faith’s Victory  Over My Past, Present, and Future

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
1 John‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

One of the keys to understanding the kingdom of God is an awareness that the kingdom of God has past, present, and future implications. For example:

  1. I have been saved. (Past)
  2. I am being saved. (Present)
  3. I will be saved. (Future)

Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection is a finished work of God’s grace and mercy. Once my faith meets His grace, salvation is accomplished. My spirit has been saved, perfected in the eyes of the Father through the blood of His Son.

Still, there is an ongoing (present-day) work of salvation happening in my life. My mind is being renewed, my emotions are being restored, my will is being re-disciplined. In this sense I am still being saved. Theologians call it progressive sanctification. It means that, although my spirit has been saved, my soul is still being saved. I am a finished work still in progress.

There are, however, works that will only be fully accomplished in the future, when I step out of time into eternity. For example, my physical body will not reach its fullest “glorified” potential until either I pass through the doors of death, or I am caught up to meet Jesus when He returns. In other words, my body will, one day, be saved. Not only is this future salvation for my physical body, but, the truth is, because I live in a fallen world marked by sin, sickness, poverty, war, and death, there are many things that will not be fully redeemed until Jesus comes! Ultimate and complete salvation is yet to come for our world. This is why I must daily lift my eyes in expectation of that “Great Day of the Lord” when “mercy and truth meet together, and righteousness and peace kiss.” (Psalm 85:10, my paraphrase).

Past, present, and future – these are the realities of the kingdom, whose King is described as “the One who was (past), who is (present), and who is to come (future).

Faith is the substance required for us to walk in victory in each those dimensions – past, present, and future. We must believe that God’s work is finished, that He is still working to accomplish His purposes in me, and that He will be faithful to complete the work that He began in us, even until the day of Jesus Christ. (Phil. 1:6).

  • This is the victory that has overcome the world- (past)
  • This is the victory that is overcoming the world- (present)
  • This is the victory that will overcome the world – (future)

This is the victory- our faith, not in things, but in Jesus Christ, who is “the same yesterday, today, and forever!” (Hebrews 13:8).
Father- today I declare by faith that my past is covered in the cleansing blood of Jesus, my present is empowered by your Holy Spirit, and my future gloriously awaits me with my Father’s promise of eternal life! Amen!

Humility Brings Blessing

Humility is not a natural disposition, it is a daily decision. But the benefits of choosing to be humble are well worth the discipline it requires.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”  James‬ ‭4:10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

King Hezekiah was one of very few Old Testament kings who “did what was right in the sight of the Lord.” He tore down idolatrous images, he cleaned up messes left by previous leaders, and he led his people back to the ways of the Lord – decisions that came with personal cost.

The results of his strong but humble leadership are clear:

“And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, in the law and in the commandment, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart. So he prospered.” ‭II Chronicles‬ ‭31:21‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Pride assumes and depends on its own strength, ability, and intellect; but humility acknlowledges weakness, is aware of blind-spots, and actively depends on the strength of God for any and every success.

  • Sometimes I want to defend myself.
  • Sometimes I want to be heard.
  • Sometimes I want to be right (even when I’m not).

But God resists the proud.

The good news is He gives grace to the humble. Humility always leads to blessing.

Father- I choose to humble myself before You. Help me to please You with my attitudes and actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Power of One

Carrie and I had just gotten married and were both working at the Cracker Barrel. The summer before my senior year of college we were asked to go to another state and help salvage a struggling store.

It didn’t take long for Carrie and I to realize why this particular location was doing so poorly. One of the managers was unprofessional, apathetic, and the chief cause of the high turnover rate among the employees there.

Have you ever heard the term, “one apple can spoil the whole bunch?”

I’m always amazed at the power of one.

Think about it in biblical terms:

  1. The power of one man -Adam- resulted in the life of all mankind.
  2. The power of one sin resulted in the scarring of all humanity.
  3. The power of one man -Jesus- resulted in forgiveness of sin and the opportunity to walk in freedom and eternal life.
  4. The power of one choice determines your eternal reality. Eternal life or eternal death depends on what you do with Jesus.

The writer of Hebrews wrote:

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”  Hebrews 10:19-25 ESV

‭‭Sin and selfishness, like marionettes strung and manipulated by the puppeteer called satan, ravage our world.

Before we blame everything entirely on satan, we must face the reality of our own sin and selfishness. We are not lifeless marionettes; we have the power of choice.

Repentance is the beginning of freedom from the strings that bind us.
In a world so broken, so damaged, so bent on revenge, entitlement, racism, and rebellion, the Holy Spirit reminds us to:

  1. Draw near to God.
  2. Hold fast to hope.
  3. Stir up love.

Only God can save our world. But He has given to each person the power of one choice.

Today’s realities are a result of yesterday’s choices.

But here’s the hope: the choices I make today will shape the days ahead.

Instead of blaming God, draw near to Him. Instead of becoming so negative, hold fast to hope. Instead of provoking strife, stir up love.

That’s the power of one.

Do You Have Enough Faith to Rest?

I often find myself over-working, over-thinking, and over-doing life. For any of us who put our hearts into our lives, we can end up carrying stress to the point that it affects our ability to rest.

Resting is not merely the physical act of reclining or sleeping. No – there are many times I have been in a physical posture of rest while not being at rest

Resting is not a position of your body, but a posture of your soul.

  • Is your mind at rest?
  • Is your will (your decision making process) at rest?
  • Are your emotions at rest?

Our Father desires us to be at rest. His promises are repeated throughout Scripture:

  • He leads us to green pastures, beside still waters to restore our souls.
  • Take My yoke upon you- for My yoke is easy and My burden is light, and you will find rest for your souls.
  • Cast your cares upon Me- because I care for you!

Rest requires faith.

Think about it. The reason we are not at rest is because we are not trusting God in a particular area of life. Where there is a lack of trust there is a lack of rest.

The writer of Hebrews wrote these words to Jewish believers, who, after putting their trust in Jesus as their Savior, were now beginning to revert back to trusting in their own works. He reminds them:

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:12, 19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Strong words! My uneasiness and stress is directly associated with my unbelief and lack of trust in God – something referred to as “an evil heart of unbelief.”

To be clear- this is not to be taken as if God is angry and calling us evil people. No- our Father is alerting us to an evil that constantly tries to draw us away from Him. We must resist the “evils” of unbelief and put our trust and faith in the Father who wants to give us rest!

Remember when Jesus was in the boat with His disciples during the storm? The disciples didn’t have rest until their circumstances were at peace. But Jesus had rest despite the storm.

And you can, too!

Father- I confess my proclivity to carry more than I should. I often put more trust in my own works than I do in Yours.

Today I ask that You would carry the weight of my cares. I ask that You would give rest to my soul. I ask that You would help me trust You with everything that concerns me.

Today I choose to rest. To trust.

Amen.
