The Gift of Silence in a Noisy World

Life is noisy. Kids are noisy. Co-workers are noisy. The news is noisy. Restaurants are noisy. Traffic is noisy. We are so accustomed to noise that we often avoid silence. We have music playing while we read. We leave the tv on while we're at home. We sometimes turn on fans or even phone apps that make "white noise" so we can sleep with noise. Even our church services avoid silence. When is the last time you were silent? When is the last time you turned off the noise? True, you aren't able… Read More

Songs of Hope in the Midst of Injustice

Years ago Carrie and I walked into a old, family-owned BBQ restaurant in a small town in North Carolina. As we entered the door every person inside turned their heads ever so slightly toward us. That split-second encounter seemed to last for three minutes. It felt like an old western movie when the city slicker walks through the swinging saloon doors, the piano player stops playing, everybody stops talking, and then one person says, “You ain’t from around here, are ya? My Daily Choice to Die (and a word about self harm)

Only in Christ is there life after death. What an awesome thought! But we sometimes forget that, in Christ, there is death before life.  In order to come to Jesus I had to die to myself. We were buried therefore… Read More

Imagine Your Life Without Jesus

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us; (‭Psalm‬ ‭124‬:‭2-3‬ ESV) There are some phrases in the Bible that seem to always stop me in my tracks. This is one of them – “If it had not been for the Lord who was in my side…” I remember driving on the interstate in Virginia, coming around a curve and losing control of my vehicle. Apparently there had… Read More

Thoughts From a Dad Who Just Moved His Daughter to College

Yesterday we moved our daughter into her college dorm. Over 4,000 freshmen are attending Liberty University this Fall, and they all moved into their dorms on the same day! Traffic was bumper to bumper over the entire campus, but the Liberty Student-Leaders were stationed to direct traffic, answer questions, and even to carry all of the luggage! They made the process so easy. We spent several hours working on Gabby’s room – unpacking her boxes, organizing her clothes, rearranging the room, making her bed, etc. Her roommate is wonderful, and Gabby also… Read More
