Friends Carry One Another

Four unidentified men, guilty of breaking and entering and destruction of private property, are some of my heroes.  Their story is found in Mark 2 – a story of friendship, faith, and freedom.  “And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son,… Read More

The Comfort of Slavery

We’ve seen it too many times. A girl escapes an abusive relationship only to return to her abuser. An alcoholic remains sober for months, maybe years, then a personal crisis triggers a drunken binge. A person loses a significant amount of weight, then makes small compromises and slowly regains the weight, along with its emotional heaviness.  Why do we so easily return to that which once enslaved us?  It’s one thing to be physically set free; but unless that freedom is realized in our spirits and also our souls (mind, emotions), we… Read More

The Evil Inside of Me

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness…. Read More

A Generation Set Free

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” (Mark 9:37 ESV) Jesus loves kids. He held them, blessed them, healed them, and honored them throughout the entirety of His ministry on earth. In Mark 9 we read of the disciples who are arguing among themselves over who is the greatest. Jesus responds by bringing a child over and talking about the humility and innocence of a child that brings great reward. It is my opinion that ministry to… Read More

When Others Despise Your Transformation

As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. (Acts 16:16 ESV) Luke is known for capturing details that help paint a picture for us to easily visualize the encounters he experienced. In one sentence he describes the personal bondage of a young unnamed girl – and we can’t help but feel compassion toward her. This girl is like so many people we encounter everyday: She was enslaved spiritually. She was… Read More
